Keeping Our Promise — Teach

The mission here was to share an expert’s knowledge.

Situation and approach

“Keeping Our Promise” is a small volunteer-driven organization that helps resettle US wartime allies whose work has made them unsafe in their home countries.

In the fall of 2021 the organization was overwhelmed by the urgent need to resettle hundreds of Afghan refugees. A critical step towards independence is getting an American driving license. But, Afghan driving norms are radically different. Without preparation, candidates fail the test. Most volunteers were intimidated by the task. There was a single professional teacher, but he had limited availability.

The approach was to let the expert do what he does, accompanied by someone the audience could related to.

This video offers both generic advice on the driving test, and specific advice for Afghan drivers on how American driving is different.

Audience and setting

The primary audience is refugees preparing for the driving test. The secondary audience is volunteers willing to teach refugees how to drive in America.

The video is part of an on-line library of resources. Audiences watch the video on their own devices on their own schedule.
